What should you ask your roofing contractor before hiring?

When hiring a roofing contractor to repair or replace your roof in Minnesota, it is important to ask a few probing questions to ensure they can be trusted to perform good work. Some questions you should ask are:

  • Are you licensed and insured? Only a roofing contractor who is licensed to work in the state of Minnesota and has general liability insurance should be trusted to work on your home.
  • How long have you been working as a roofing contractor? Roofing is a difficult trade which can take months to learn and years to master. The senior roofing contractor working on your home’s roof should have at least five years of industry experience under their belt.
  • What warranty do you offer on your work? Different roofing contractors offer different workmanship warranties guaranteeing the longevity of their roofing work. Any reliable roofing contractor should offer a workmanship warranty of at least 5-10 years.
  • How long will this job take? A roof replacement is usually a two-day job, though larger roofs may require three days for replacement. If a roofing contractor tells you that a job will take a week or more, they probably aren’t reputable.
  • Do you take steps to protect my property? If performed carelessly, roofing work can easily result in damage to your home and yard. A roofing contractor should assure you that they are taking measures to prevent damage from their work and will properly dispose of all debris when they are done.
  • Do you work with subcontractors? Some roofing contractors in Minnesota will outsource their work to subcontractors. This isn’t always a bad thing, but you should make sure that whatever subcontractors they’re using have the proper credentials.
