What is the Difference Between Single-Hung & Double-Hung Windows?

When you’re choosing new windows for your home in the Twin Cities metro, you’ll commonly have to make the choice between single-hung and double-hung windows. The difference between these two types of windows is how many opening sashes the windows have.

A single-hung window has a top sash that is fixed in place and a bottom sash that opens. A double-hung window has a top sash and a bottom sash that both open. There are pros and cons to both these popular window styles.

Pros of Single-Hung Windows

Cost – If you don’t wish to spend too much money on window replacements in the Twin Cities, you’re better off choosing single-hung windows. Since a single-hung window has less moving parts than a double-hung window, it is cheaper to build the window’s glass panes, frames, and hardware.
Energy Efficiency – Ultimately, the frame material used for your window is the biggest determining factor for energy efficiency. That being said, single-hung windows provide less opportunity for air to leak in and tend to be slightly more energy efficient than double-hung windows.

Pros of Double-Hung Windows

Cleaning – Double-hung windows are easier to clean than single-hung windows because the entire window can be cleaned from inside your home. With single-hung windows, you’ll need to go outside to clean the stationary upper sash. This can prove a challenge during the winter in the Twin Cities.
Ventilation – Because double-hung windows have two opening sashes, they allow for better airflow and ventilation. With only one opening sash, it can be more challenging to ventilate your home with single-hung windows.
